Hugh & Mary Palmer Dargan

Hugh Dargan, ASLA and Mary Palmer Dargan, ASLA have been in practice designing gardens for over 30 years and oversee all projects. Certified by the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Board (CLARB), they practice landscape architecture by reciprocity nationwide. Both are currently assisted by a group of several talented landscape architects.

When designing residential landscapes for new homes, the Dargans take a team approach--working closely with the client, house architect, interior designer, and builder to maximize the effectiveness and functionality of the landscape’s design and its integration with the home’s interior

The Dargans have received numerous trophies and awards including both Regional and National Awards of Merit from the American Society of Landscape Architects. And In 1992, the Dargans were named by Southern Accents as two of the South's leading landscape architects in a profile titled "Four Designers Under 40." Since then, Dargan Landscape Architects has become increasingly national in its focus.

Design Inspirations and Approach
Mary Palmer Dargan and Hugh Dargan have a long-standing interest in garden history. Together they have visited and studied hundreds of gardens in Europe, the United States and Great Britain. Their creative sensibility is grounded in the best examples of historic landscape design, and they acknowledge wholeheartedly the influence of great Italian, French, English, Portuguese and American gardens in aspects of their own work.

While their landscape designs often reflect images and techniques brought home from frequent trips abroad, they believe each project rests firmly on the client’s needs, interests and personal style.
"It is important to us that each design has its own identity and sense of place. Properties are as individual as fingerprints."

History and Recognition
Hugh Dargan founded his landscape architecture practice in 1973. It was incorporated in 1984 as Hugh Dargan Associates, Inc., when he was joined by Mary Palmer Dargan as a principal. In 2000, it became Dargan Landscape Architects, Inc.

Mary Palmer Dargan and Hugh Dargan first received national attention in the mid-1980s for their re-creations of 18th and 19th century gardens in Charleston, South Carolina. During the same time, influential English garden-writer Penelope Hobhouse featured one of their Charleston gardens for inclusion in her landmark book, Garden Style; only three other American gardens were chosen.

In addition to highly-regarded historic preservation projects in the United States, they have completed large master plans for The National Trust in England at Newark Park and at Stanway, the home of the Earl of Wemyss.

Several of their projects currently air on Ground Breakers—a weekly, primetime television series produced by Home & Garden Television (HGTV). Also, the Dargans’ own Atlanta garden was highlighted in the HGTV primetime series, Secret Gardens Of... which focuses on outstanding properties around the world. CNN’s Landscape Central has also featured their work. The Dargans’ projects have been featured in major books and dozens of magazines and newspapers such as Garden Design, Southern Accents and The New York Times. Their Charleston work is archived at the South Carolina Historical Society. They currently serve as Vice-Chairs of the Historic Preservation Professional Interest of ASLA. Over the past two decades, the Dargans have been invited to lecture widely on garden history, the art of landscape design, and a variety of other topics with the aim of communicating an understanding and appreciation of good design to a broad, public audience. The Dargans are currently completing the manuscript for a fully-illustrated book in which they share their approach to creating residential landscapes titled, Timeless Landscape Design: The Four-Part Master Plan.
